Altrusim or False: Millenial Volunteers are 21st Century Indentured Servants?

I fear that many young adults aka millenials (16-24 year olds) are not volunteering for the right reasons, and that many organizations are taking advantage of them in the form of unpaid ‘internships’. This bumper crop of labor although suggesting volunteering is now more popular than ever in fact is setting the stage for a decline by the time they reach 35-42 years old when there is a more predictable, rational bump. Has anyone considered the fall-out?

You bring up some interesting points, but I am not sure what you mean by “21st Century Indentured Servants.” I agree that many unpaid internships do seriously exploit young people. I also think that offering unpaid internship positions creates life-long advantages for wealthier people who do not need income for work. Because of the correlations between wealth and race in America, offering unpaid internships also decreases the opportunities for creating  vibrant diverse workplaces.

It sounds like you have a few different ideas brewing. Young people volunteering for the wrong reasons. Organizations taking advantage of young people. The decline in volunteers as they age. Because of all these different points, I’m having a hard time understanding what your asking… I would love some more info.

Your question also reminded me of this NY Times piece about how most internships are illegal http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/business/03intern.html?pagewanted=all
